The Dr. Revici Primer
IV. Tissue Cholesterol: THE ESSENTIAL Anti-Inflammatory
Inflammation is a natural function. For example, it eliminates old cells that have reached the end of their life span so they can be replaced by new cells.
Further, ordinary daily activity causes minor tears in tissues. The body’s inflammatory response ‘mops up’ these worn-out tissues, as well as damage from injury, allowing the generation of new tissue.
Cholesterol’s job in tissues is to stop the inflammatory response once its job is done.
The inflammatory response is also responsible for destroying pathogenic organisms, such as viruses and bacteria. In fact it is the inflammatory response to a virus, not the virus itself, that causes all the symptoms of the flu - from aches and chills to a runny nose and nausea.
Symptoms resolve when cholesterol in tissues, i.e., Tissue CholesterolTM, stops the inflammatory response once its job is done. It was Dr. Revici who discovered that cholesterol and many of its derivatives deactivate inflammatory fatty acids. He therefore named cholesterol and its derivatives “anti-fatty acids”.
Tissue cholesterol™ is depleted and pathology results when any of the following perpetuate inflammation: repetitive trauma; persistent stress; high sugar intake; ongoing exposures to toxins (chemicals in food, air and water, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, household cleaning products, chemical laden cosmetics and personal hygiene products, pathogens, GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms), oxidized cholesterol and polyunsaturated oils, heavy metals); and autoimmune antibodies. Cholesterol-lowering drugs and supplements can also deplete tissue cholesterol.
In autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and multiple sclerosis tissue damage is initiated by rampant inflammation. Inflammation releases tissue antigens, proteins “foreign” to the immune system. As a result, the immune system produces antibodies against previously healthy tissues just as it produces antibodies in response to a virus in a vaccine. Now, not only is there tissue damage from inflammation, is also tissue damage caused by the antibody/antigen complex.
In recent decades, inflammatory markers have been identified in heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer and more. Actually, it is now difficult to find a disease process that does not have a positive inflammatory marker. It appears that most if not all disease is initiated by unbridled inflammation.
Low blood cholesterol most often results in low cholesterol in tissues. Cholesterol in tissues serves as a control rod, regulating the fatty acid activity and stopping the inflammatory response from running amok. The quantum and polar forces of cholesterol deactivate inflammatory fatty acids. Thus, Tissue CholesterolTM can significantly reduce or eliminate unwanted inflammation, providing the trauma or toxin that incites the inflammation is removed.
First, inflammation run amok explains why low cholesterol is associated with increased mortality rates from all causes. Second, it also explains why low cholesterol results in adverse events such as autoimmune disease, intra-cerebral hemorrhage, cancer, infection, adrenal failure, suicide, mental disorders, and yes, Alzheimer’s and even heart disease!
It is over 80 years since Dr. Revici discovered the critical role of anti-fatty acids in health and disease. Dr. Revici’s well-documented and extensive research in lipids necessitates close scrutiny of the prevailing practices to lower cholesterol to ever more dangerous levels.
